LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Understory Arts Altadena acknowledges its presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded land of the Gabrielino Tongva peoples. Altadena is located on the stolen homelands of the Xaxaamonga (Hahamongna) tribal band. Their traditional territory — Tovaangar — includes the lands now called Los Angeles, Riverside, western San Bernardino, parts of Orange County, and the four southern Channel Islands.

We recognize that the U.S. government and non-Native settlers subjected the Gabrielino Tongva peoples to historic and continuing injustices, including genocide, forced displacement, and cultural and linguistic erasure. We honor their elders and descendants — past, present, and emerging — who continue to steward these lands and waters.

Understory is a guest on this ground, and commits to learning from, elevating, and growing relationships with Tongva people and communities.
